Goals For My Research

I would like to research about the different languages spoken here at DHS. I would also like to research about our students here at DHS, if they get picked on about the way they speak because it's different.

Your second point, the one about 'whether or not kids get picked on because they speak a different language' is a very interesting question. Having worked in a high school for seven years in Chicago, I realized that the multiplicity of languages even in something as common as an 'American' High School is so complex that it often leads to so many of the tensions that are so common to many High Schools like the one that I worked at. In particular, I'm speaking about the many 'non-vocal' languages that students speak. In particular the way students dress and other 'expressive' languages they choose to portray to their classmates. Whether the students are artist, musicians, athletes, or techies, they've made choices about 'how' and 'what' they will say through others and these choices cause an incredible amount of discomfort amongst groups that are not like them. I wonder if it has to do with a feeling of being invaded. What I mean here is that maybe some students feel threatened by anyone who 'speaks' something that they don't...maybe it's because they 'wish' they could speak that way too (meaning they feel left out) or maybe it's just that they've built up so many prejudices about what someone who 'speaks' that way (let's say football for example) that they could find themselves ever admitting that that is a valid form of expression. I wonder if we were able to see those choices made out of 'taste' as spoken languages if that would change the way that people got along?
